Goals of Advanced Stroke Life Support:

  • Describe why early treatment may result in a marked reduction in risk of disability
  • Identify the five main stroke syndromes and relate them to pathophysiology and clinical signs
  • Perform focused evaluation to identify stroke, its location and severity, and t-PA contraindications
  • Describe the logistics of an acute stroke team
  • Identify how and when to administer t-PA to acute ischemic stroke patients
  • Describe the six aspects of acute stroke care for hospitalized patients

Advanced Stroke Life Support

Advanced Stroke Life Support is a hands on 8 hour course, developed by the University of Miami Center for Research in Medical Education.  This course has become the standard of pre-hospital and hospital acute stroke training for the American Heart Association.  It utilizes the Miami Emergency Neurologic Deficit (MEND) Exam Checklist which consists of a combination of the Cincinnati Pre-hospital Stroke Scale and the NIH Stroke Scale.
